Provided here are novel chalcogenopyrylium dyes and nanostructures comprised of chalcogenopyrylium dyes.  Such nanostructures are useful for surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopic (SERS) and surface-enhanced resonance Raman scattering (SERRS).
