Smart Health Monitoring & Diagnosis System Based on Wearable Nano-biosensing Networks

Background:

In the last decade, major advancements in the field of micro & nano electronics, photonics, electro-mechanical systems and wireless communication technologies have enabled the development of compact wearable devices, with applications in diverse fields such as medical, wellness, sport/fitness, security or even business operations. A recent report published by the International Data Corporation (IDC) forecasts that worldwide wearable shipments will reach 173.4 million by 2019. Interestingly, among all the wearable devices that have been released so far, the most popular type were medical devices that collect and transmit health-related data. However, despite their potential, existing wearable devices are only able to measure very few parameters, such as heart rate, temperature or blood pressure. In parallel to these efforts, nanotechnology is enabling the development of novel nanosensors that are able to detect different types of events at the nanoscale with unprecedented accuracy.

Technology Overview:

This invention is comprised of a flexible bio-photonic sensing implant and an external wearable device capable of activating and obtaining data from the implant. A small surface plasmon resonance grating is implanted subcutaneously in a patient. This grating is bio-functionalized (i.e. locations on its surface are chemically optimized to attach specific analytes). The analytes can be biomarkers or any other chemical that is useful to identify or measure.  The wearable device contains an array of optical nano-sources and nano-detectors for distributed excitation and measurement of the biosensing nano-chip. This architecture allows us to move all the active components of the system outside the human body and serves as a nano to macro interface between bio-events and the user.
